JACQUIE Little fulfilled a dream on Friday night with the launch of her mystery novel, Starting Price.

The timing was crucial. The wife of Cox Plate-winning trainer Colin Little is a patient at Cabrini Hospital battling an incurable brain tumor.

Mrs Little's quest to be an author began five years ago. Three years ago a thief stole her computer with the virtually completed novel in it. Undeterred, she started again as she shared her hours as a wife and mother, a syndicator of racehorses and a thoroughbred pedigree consultant.

She also spent five years refurbishing Lord Lodge at the Caulfield racetrack, which was recognised as one of Australia's top 100 bed and breakfast accommodation sites.

While Colin was celebrating successes such as El Segundo in the Cox Plate, the adventurous Mrs Little walked the Kokoda Trail as part of her extreme fitness routine. Not long after her return she suffered the first symptoms of the brain tumor but pressed ahead to finish the novel.  Read Full Story

Written by Jacquie Little, a horse lover from her early days and the wife of the highly successful Victorian trainer and Australian Trainers' Association (Vic Branch) Committee Member Colin Little, Jacquie worked on her novel for five years, finishing shortly before discovering she had a brain tumour.

STARTING PRICE tells the story of when Ryan Miller, an ex cop with racing roots, joins the stewards department at the National Racing Commission. It doesn’t take him long to discover that a pervading sense of disquiet surrounds his department.

Keen to make a go of his new career he says nothing, but things change when a prominent jockey is found murdered and Ryan’s investigative skills are called into play.

The more Ryan digs into the life of the jockey and those associated with him, the more intriguing the situation becomes. Calling on unconventional contacts made during his days in the police force, Ryan unearths a trial of deceit, revenge and blackmail.
