Xian Win Kicks Off Chinese New Year
Feb 15, 2010
The Colin Little trained Xian showed plenty of turn of foot in winning the $13,000 Cup Day 14th March Maiden (1000m) at Pakenham on Friday.
Xian ($3.80) started well from an outside draw and settled nicely in the box seat for jockey Michelle Payne where she was able to stride up to the leaders approaching the turn and despite cornering wide flattened out strongly once balanced to defeat Bambina ($9) by over a length running away, with Cyclone Sarah ($10) a further length away third.
The three-year-old filly by Cape Cross was having just her first start but showed connections plenty of promise easily accounting for the race experienced Bambina over the concluding stages.
Little, who trains out of Lord Lodge at Caulfield, has been winning with some frequency in the country of late with Poco Gusto, Predominator, A Little Smugg and Forty Two Below all showing more than average ability.
Xian also looks like developing nicely over the next few months having raced professionally throughout, flattening out on the shifty surface over the final 200m and will appreciate the slower tracks through Autumn.
Payne who has returned to riding after a brief stint in the TVN commentary box was patient on the first starter and allowed the filly to balance on the slow track before asking her to let down.
Little will now look for a similar race for the filly as she builds on her rating with no doubt an eye on the mid week city class races over the coming months.
