Gutsy Kafil scores again at Bendigo

Sep 10, 2014

Kafil handled his first attempt at 2400 metres perfectly in his brave win in the Scintillo @ Ridgeview Park Stud Showcase Handicap at Bendigo.

Kafil found his best form with a win two starts back before the gelding posted a solid second over 2226 metres at Sale on August 31.

Trainer Colin Little saw enough merit in those two runs to give Kafil a chance at 2400 metres at Bendigo but the six-year-old had to contend with a 60kg handicap.

Little decided against engaging a claiming apprentice, preferring to book champion jockey Damien Oliver to partner the gelding.

Kafil started the $30,000 contest well but Oliver gave him an easy time early, which left the handy performer racing midfield on his own for the first 1400 metres.

The field began to compress from the 1000 metres but Oliver eased Kafil wider on the track to give him enough galloping room to build his momentum from the 600 metres.

Oliver continued to let Kafil gather himself early in the straight before asking the son of Stratum for his best effort at the 200 metres, which drew an immediate response.

Kafil fought hard under his hefty weight to get home to post his fourth win from 28 starts by a nose, earning another $18,000 in prizemoney.

Kafil latest victory took his earning to more than $79,000 with the promise of another win or two in his spring preparation.

Congratulations to Kafil’s owners and all involved with his Bendigo success.
